Art 1
This is an introductory course open to all students which explores all components of the general art education curriculum that may include drawing and painting, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking and crafts. Students will learn to use contour and modeling as well as color to create figures, objects, interiors and landscapes. Students will explore art history and the lives of artists influencing the aesthetics of specific periods in time.
AP 2D Art & Design
AP 2D Art & Design is an advanced, portfolio‑driven studio course where students develop a personal artistic voice through sustained investigation, experimentation, and revision. Throughout the year, students explore a wide range of 2D media—including drawing, painting, digital art, mixed media, and photography—as they build a cohesive body of work that reflects thoughtful inquiry and creative risk‑taking. Students learn to analyze their artistic decisions, refine their processes, and present their work with clarity and intention. The course culminates in the submission of the official AP Portfolio, showcasing both their Sustained Investigation and Selected Works.
Art History
The History of Philadelphia Through Art
The History of Philadelphia Through Art is a project‑based art history course that explores the city’s cultural evolution through its artists, communities, and public spaces. Students investigate Philadelphia’s Indigenous foundations, colonial craftsmanship, industrial growth, 20th‑century mural movements, and contemporary voices, analyzing how art reflects identity, activism, and social change. Through primary source study, visual analysis, and hands‑on creative projects, students connect historical context to their own artmaking while building a deeper understanding of the people and stories that shaped Philadelphia. The course blends research, studio work, and critical thinking to make local history meaningful, relevant, and creatively engaging.
