Health Information Management

The Health Information Management Program (also known as Medical Records) is for the students who enjoy learning how to enter patient data using computer software and organizing medical information. The HIM Program prepares students who want to pursue a career in the healthcare industry in various levels of medical care. The program teaches student safety in the workplace, infection control procedures, classify and entering medical data along with learning the medical-legal and ethical laws in the healthcare environment.

This coursework combines business and healthcare in a unique program primarily focused on the management level skills of healthcare. Students learn to acquire patient information in order to prepare electronic medical records under the supervision of a medical records administrator. This program includes instruction in medical records science, record classification, computer software operations, and the management of information systems.

Students also learn soft skills, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, communication skills, medical and legal ethics, the applicable healthcare laws and regulations, exposure to medical insurances and billing. After graduation, this program has prepared students with the skills, knowledge and an advantage in the health management job market and/or as they pursue a post-secondary education in the various fields of healthcare.
